Countryside Live Honey Show 2018

The Yorkshire Beekeepers

Countryside Live Honey Show

Once again in 2018 our annual county honey show held at the countryside Live event on the Harrogate show ground was a resounding success. As many of you will know this is an open honey show where anyone within the county or from other counties, who are not actually members of Yorkshire Beekeepers can come along and exhibit their various honey’s and wax products. The winners of each class receive a beautiful prize card and winning rosette plus prize monies for first second and third places given by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society. Our best in show and winner of the blue ribbon this year was Mr. Andrew Woolhouse of Barnsley BKA with 6 magnificent jars of soft set honey in the for-sale class. Congratulations. We had a magnificent display this year and some of our new members who attended our mead making classes last year and this, came along and one actually won a second-place card on their first attempt. Also a first time exhibitor from Harrogate Beekeepers won the Novice honey class. Great to see great to see new people coming along and getting involved in the show.

All this said we do need more of you members to come along with your exhibits and take part in this show. This is the main shop window for all Yorkshire Beekeepers to show off their honeys and wax and mead products to the masses of the public who attend the show, over 10,000 again this year. We also have a scheme whereby if you attend as an exhibitor or as a steward you can bring along 25 jars of your own honey or equivalent candles or beeswax moulded figures all for sale on our stall, giving your products lots of publicity encouraging people to buy your products throughout the year. We have some great honey and wax exhibitors within our great county of Yorkshire so let’s all pull together to make our honey show an even greater success, even if you have never shown before come and have a go. Bring along your products to sell and show off to the public and maybe win prizes as a bonus.

I have been chief steward of this show now for Y.B.K.A for the last 17 years and enjoyed every show we have set up and shown, even before we decided to move the show in 2005 to this fantastic new location central for everyone within the county. To this event the Countryside Live Show on the Harrogate show ground .

This year though was my last show in charge, I have now retired from the post and handed over the reins to my successor Mark Millard who is also secretary for Wakefield and Pontefract Beekeepers. Mark is an excellent exhibitor himself and I’m sure you will continue to support him and all all the team around him, plus new members who come forward to continue to make this show go from strength to strength.

I would also like to thank all the stewards who help make the show the success it has become for all their dedication over the years, a great team.

I am for the time being continuing to help set up and organise all the volunteers for the Y.B.K.A pavilion at the Great Yorkshire Show, plus will with the help of Tony Jefferson be doing live bees demonstrations at the show in the bees garden. So still involved but thought it was time now to stand down as chief steward of the honey show to attain continuity for the show hopefully for many years to come with Mark now at the helm.

Good luck to everyone involved and remember, this great show needs the support of each and every one of our associations not just one or two. Plus all exhibitors from over the county lines, all will be made welcome.

Dave Shannon.
