National Honey Day 2025

Every 21 October, beekeepers across the UK mark National Honey Day, a day to savour honey’s true flavour – and to protect what makes it genuine. At Yorkshire Beekeepers, we invite everyone to join us in celebrating the craft, care, and complexity that go into each jar of real, local honey. What is National Honey […]

The Great Yorkshire Show 2025 – phew, what a scorcher!

GYS 2025 Yellow Legged Asian Hornet

Between Tuesday 8th and Friday 12th July, various members of the YBKA Volunteer Stewards Team could be found in and around the Normanby Pavilion engaging visitors in discussion and activities about honey bees and beekeeping. This was no mean feat, given the consistently high temperatures that graced this year’s event. As we glowed and perspired […]

150 years of the British Beekeepers Association

Whitby Beekeepers’ Association has recently taken part in celebrating 150 years of the British Beekeepers Association.
The beekeeping charity operates like many such groups with a local team – Whitby BKA with 75 members; a county group – Yorkshire BKA 2,200 members; and the national governing body British BKA which has up to 30,000 members. During 2024, we are celebrating 150 years.

The YBKA Honey Show at the Emley Show 3rd August 2024

Dave in action

The last time a YBKA Honey Show took place was way back in 2019. Covid caused the cancellation of the event the following year and the traditional venue at the Great Yorkshire Showground was lost when the Yorkshire Agricultural Society discontinued the Countryside Live event. From membership responses to a questionnaire about the future of the YBKA Honey Show, issued in 2023, most interest was expressed in linking with another event, providing members with the chance to enjoy activities additional to the show itself.

YBKA at the Great Yorkshire Show 2024

The weather gods were not kind to the event this year, but a hardy team of volunteers managed to keep up the spirits of most, if not all, visitors to the Normanby Pavilion from 9 to12 July. This year’s themes were beekeeping in general, swarms and swarming and the Asian Hornet.

As usual, we were joined by show stalwart, Frank Ward from Bees for Development with a display of the charity’s work in Africa. On the, very wet, Tuesday we were joined by Diane Drinkwater, Chair of BBKA, to judge the nucleus hive entries in the Hives and Honey Show.
