Yorkshire Nest
Yellow-Legged Asian Hornet Found in Yorkshire

A confirmed Asian hornet nest was recently identified in Langton, near Malton, in North Yorkshire. While it’s only one nest, its discovery underscores the importance of vigilance in our region. This isolated case does not suggest a widespread establishment, but it serves as a timely reminder of the value of early detection through monitoring and prompt reporting

Yorkshire beekeepers have once again shown their dedication in protecting our pollinators and wider environment. While recent reports of an Asian hornet nest are a reminder of the threat these invasive predators pose, it is important that we approach the situation with calm vigilance rather than alarm. The chances are this nest was an isolated case, but our collective effort in monitoring and early detection remains crucial.

Working with Your YLAH District Coordinator

Each district in Yorkshire has a District Asian Hornet (YLAH) coordinator. They are your first point of contact for advice on monitoring, reporting, and setting up bait stations. Coordinators are also linked into the wider regional response network, ensuring that local sightings and data contribute to the national effort. Beekeepers are encouraged to:

  • Make themselves known to their district coordinator.

  • Share sightings and questions promptly.

  • Support local monitoring by following their guidance and using approved reporting channels.

Monitoring Stations – Your Role in Early Detection

Monitoring stations are one of the most effective tools for early warning. Many beekeepers already have one in their apiary, but you don’t need to be a beekeeper to help. A simple station, placed in a sunny, sheltered spot, can provide vital information.

Even if you don’t see an Asian hornet visiting, the act of monitoring itself contributes to our understanding and preparedness. Don’t be discouraged by a “blank result” – this is valuable too.

Homemade Bait Recipe

If you’d like to make your own bait for monitoring, here is a tried-and-tested recipe shared by Asian Hornet Alert:

Using the Asian Hornet Watch App

The Asian Hornet Watch app is available for both Android and Apple devices. It allows you to:

  • Record potential sightings with photographs.

  • Send location data instantly to the monitoring network.

  • Access identification guides to avoid confusion with lookalikes.

Having the app ready on your phone means you can report quickly and accurately if you spot something suspicious.

Engaging the Public – Catch Registration

Many people beyond our beekeeping community are keen to support the cause. If you know friends, neighbours, or local landowners who are happy to host a monitoring station, encourage them to self-register on the CATCH website:

By registering now, they become part of a wider network of volunteers who can be mobilised quickly when needed. This “waiting army” of spotters could make all the difference if Asian hornets establish further in the UK.

Final Word

Our message is clear: stay alert, stay informed, but don’t panic. Monitoring is about patience and preparedness. By working with your district YLAH coordinator, using the app, and encouraging others to register, you are playing a vital role in defending Yorkshire’s bees and biodiversity.
